Slipcover Makeover:

This slipcover makeover began with a client calling to ask if I could fix slipcovers someone else made. I just love the satisfaction of completing a DIY project, however, in the world of decor, there is nothing like the disappointment of investing money, materials, time and effort into a big project and having it flop completely. So when do you call the professionals and when do you DIY? I recently had a customer who deeply regretted her friend’s DIY attempt to make slipcovers and gracefully she allowed me to post her valiant attempts compared to the detailed work of a skilled professional, yours truly. Slipcover Rescue was her only hope at this point since these covers needed some HELP.

Here are some of the dangers of DIY and proof that some things are better left to the pros.

1. If you are working with a professional, they use commercial machines specially designed for heavy weight slipcover fabrics. Professionals have invested in their skill and equipment, you should invest in the professional as well.

2. Another pit fall of a DIY project is not using thread appropriate to the final application. It is imperative to use upholstery weight thread, for which a basic machine it not equipped. Yet another reason to take this project to a pro.

3. Professionals have access to exclusive fabrics and products. Your local craft store may have a wide selection of fabrics, but a professional has access to thousands of exclusive, luxurious fabrics that are appropriate to the project. Don’t cheat yourself on cheap fabrics- invest in the piece. My best kept secret is my favorite fabric supplier for cotton slipcovers see it HERE.

4. Skill cannot be purchased. Through years of experience and learned skill, professionals, such as myself, perfect their craft. Professionals can bring life and custom detail to a project that cannot be achieved in a simple DIY project. In the slipcover photo below, you can see the pristine detail years of skill and talent brought to this slipcover, as opposed to the previous haphazard bow.

DIY projects bring a great sense of accomplishment, but they can also be dangerous. Be adventurous, but know when to take your project to a professional.
It was so much fun designing and constructing new washable slipcovers for my sweet client. She takes them off two or more times and month to launder them so they need to be durable and washable. Unfortunately, I could not do a rescue on the old covers, but instead I had to make new ones, hence she now has slipcovers that will last for years.
