Laundry Room Makeover Reveal

Sharing is caring!

I am so excited to announce that the Laundry Room Makeover reveal is here and I cannot be more satisfied with my “new” laundry room mudroom completed and ready. We did not sacrifice style for function, but instead the laundry mudroom is more functional and gorgeous.  We did all the work from the floor to the popcorn ceilings. This do-it-yourself project was a family affair with art made by my children hence making this “our” unique space with an eclectic vintage Bohemian feel.  Our small laundry room is more efficient since I designed it to have organized zones for laundry, mudroom with a hall tree bench, coat hooks and cubbies, command center and a ton of storage.

Looking back I cannot believe we waited so long to update this room since it was inefficient and unsightly. That has all changed in the past six weeks.

DIY Laundry Room Makeover Reveal

This past week has been a whirlwind of activity to finish the laundry room makeover, but it has been worth it!

Mudroom Hall Tree

The DIY mudroom addition now provides organized storage areas to store backpacks, purses, lunch boxes, etc. My simple mudroom ideas must haves were:

  • Storage for tote bags, backpacks, lunch boxes, purses
  • Mudroom Coat Hooks
  • A place to sit to put on shoes
  • Baskets for mittens, scarves
  • Beautiful bench cushion
  • Custom pillows made with luxurious fabrics

I am elated since all my must haves have been included in this week’s projects. Additionally,  this past week I learned how to build a hall tree with a bench, coat hooks and storage shelves. It was simple as long as I followed the hall tree plans my husband and I designed.

Mudroom Hall Tree - Storage and Bench

Hall Tree Storage

I searched the internet for DIY hall tree plans and I found nothing to suit our needs as a result I had to design my own hall tree plan. I wanted cubbies that were sectioned off but that used up valuable space so my DIY hall tree plan was altered to be open shelves instead. In the back of the hall tree I planned to have board and baton with coat hooks so I planned the placement of the board so that it would be nailed into studs thus coat hooks would be anchored into a sturdy board so it would easily hold heavy backpacks.

DIY Mudroom Bench

The mudroom bench plan was for a cushion and pillows. First, I selected the green printed fabric to make a foam bench cushion with cording (piping) and a zipper. I chose the green Fabricut fabric (Lineation in the color spring) since it would be sitting on the stained wood and it would look organic mimicking leaves growing out of the wood. Next, I designed the hall tree cushion with fabric’s pattern repeat and centered the pattern on the boxing gusset and cut the top and bottom from that as my reference point. It turned out better than I imaged.

Custom Hall Tree Bench Pillows

The pillows are my favorite cozy addition to the built-in mudroom bench. Who would want to leave this cozy mudroom hall tree bench with luxurious cushion and pillows? I caught myself sitting on the bench sipping coffee this morning admiring all our hard work. The custom pillows were constructed with fabrics from Fabricut. The Bohemian multi color pillow was made with a 20″ by 20″ down pillow form (insert) and a an invisible zipper closure with Kismet Moderno fabric. The next pillow I made was the elongated pillow (25″ by 16″) with fabric in the pattern Scarab in the color rust. This fabric is a soft and luxurious velvet. This pillow has a down insert and invisible zipper too.

Envelope Pillow

The last pillow (20″ by 20″) I constructed with Fabricut fabric Cartouche Blackstone in contrast I designed this pillow as an envelope pillow style made without a zipper. The fabric’s geometric design is embroidered on white linen fabric and I used a camel fabric for the pillow back to conserve the face fabric for a valance.

Concrete Countertop Area (Charging Station)

While planning the mudroom laundry room makeover I wanted to have a dedicated area for mobile device charging that was not only convenient but also beautiful. The space is now bright and happy and I think this is the perfect space to greet you as you gather your belongings to start your day for work and school. The countertop was build with Quikrete countertop concrete. We have used Quikrete for crafting and construction projects, but we had never used the counter top products so this was a first for us thus we did a little experimenting with color additives and finishes. I choose to use the Quikrete Liquid Cement Color Charcoal (color additive) and a Acrylic Concrete Cure Seal by Quikrete. It was so easy to construct.

Subway Tile Back Slash

We used the same subway tile that we used as the back splash in the washer dryer area for the area above the countertop. The tile adds texture and sheen which adds visual interest to this special area.

Lighting and Electric Outlet

I wanted the charging station to have a dedicated electrical outlet and a groovy light fixture so my husband ran an electric line to the area and installed the groovy light I found online. He used a combination outlet switch to allow us to have both a light switch and an outlet for a multi-device charger.

Open Shelving Storage

Open shelving was my favorite DIY storage idea for laundry rooms since it offers plenty of inexpensive visible storage for my decor items. However, I am using baskets to store other items. The baskets are pretty and organic so they add to the overall aesthetic of the laundry room open shelving storage area. I chose to use the same wood stain as in washer dryer enclosure and hall tree bench. The stained shelves are held in place with iron brackets.

Command Center

The laundry room mudroom is our home’s entryway and it’s the last place we see as we leave so I wanted to design a command center be organized with everything needed to keep the family up-to-date on schedules, to do lists, grocery lists, date and time. Last week I shared my command center must haves.

Command Center Must-Haves

The space for the command center is limited so I had to find items that would fit into the area and also provide all the necessary functions for our command center. As I mentioned last week the command center is the brain of the home it helps everyone stay organized. Unfortunately, I could not find a chalkboard in the correct dimensions, so I had to build one with the leftover wood from the hall tree see it below with “to do list”.

Door Window Valance (Cornice Board)

In my original laundry room makeover floor plan I was not sure if I would have enough fabric to construct a valance for the door window, but I really thought it needed one.

Laundry Room Valance

We were able to make a cornice board (valance) for the window on the door from the Cartouche (black and white geometric) fabric. What a difference the valance makes to the view from the other end of the room as it draws your eye up to the custom window treatment made with that gorgeous fabric.

Laundry Room Mudroom Art and Music

Art and music are very important to our family since we are all creative and enjoy creative expression. What better way to decorate our space than to use our own art? In last week’s post I mentioned the Batik fabric making workshop our family attended and those eclectic fabrics we made. I decided I had to use them so the three fabric designs that completely covered the square of fabric I stretched over art canvases and stapled them to the frame. The fourth design was a single potted cactus that I decided to frame with an embroidery hoop. I used the same wood stain I used on the shelves for the embroidery hoop before inserting the fabric. I am so happy to finally use all of them since they are so special to me. Find them in the photos below of the laundry room makeover reveal – artwork.

The line art (wash, fold, repeat) was made by my daughter. The two black and white pieces of art where my son’s creation and the frames where constructed with the mudroom hall tree scrap wood. The Copic art illustration is one of my favorite creations by my daughter. For the optimal laundry room mudroom experience I added an Amazon Dot for music so we could enjoy doing laundry.

Highlights

Our “new” laundry room mudroom combo has met all my goals for this project it is now a multifunctional room with maximum efficiency. The soft finishes have elevated this room’s overall design and comfort. The room now has lighting in three work zones including under cabinet lighting and charging station wall light.  The lighting makes the room bright and inviting. The mudroom laundry room makeover has added value and function to our home.

Challenges

The laundry room makeover had it’s challenges such as staying on schedule with illness and an out-of-town trip, and staying on budget. Staying on budget was the easier of the two challenges since we DIY everything. Additionally, our generous sponsors provided products and materials that we could not have purchased on our budget. We are so thankful for Fabricut fabrics, Quikrete and Handy Paint Pail for their support on this project.
