Home Office Storage Ideas

Sharing is caring!

This year has been a year loaded with challenges, to say the least. One of those challenges was setting up a home office space. We needed our office space to accommodate three people.

Before the virus, I was using an extra bedroom as my office space, and it was the perfect size for my needs. Then overnight, we needed an office/school space for both of our children too. Since our home did not get any larger, I had to scale back my space, cut the clutter, and optimize every storage space inch. You can see the photos of the office before I organized it HERE.

Office Space Declutter

It was not easy trying to decide what to keep and what to donate, but I asked myself if I used the item in the last 12 months. If not, it donated it.

Before I could start to devise a storage plan, I had to cut the clutter. I have been reading “Cleaning Up the Clutter” to guide me about decluttering my office and home.

File Storage Ideas

To maximize your storage space, you can use verticle storage, a desk made with filing drawers, over desk storage, shelving, baskets, and bins.

For my working files, I ordered this rolling file holder.

To store notes and phone messages I use note journals with repositionable tabs. This keeps my office space tidy (no more sticky notes pasted up everywhere).

I use a planner to store all my appointments and scheduled events.

Paper Storage Ideas

For storing papers I use on a regular basis I like to use 3-ring binders with extra-wide dividers.

Keeping track of weekly tasks I like to use a weekly to-do list for planning.

Desk Storage

For my son’s desk, we decided to use two filing cabinets with a top between them to replace my four-drawer filing cabinet like this filing cabinet.

Tip: remove the wheels when using the cabinets for a desk. Choose a filing cabinet with a small third drawer for a desk drawer.

Cord Storage

Since we all have multiple devices on our desk; computers, headphones, and lamps we needed a solution for corraling our cords.

This is the best office cord storage solution I have found.

Closet Storage

This bedroom only had a small closet, therefore I had to organize the items to be stored to maximize the storage area.

The closet has two doors thus they provided a place for two over-the-door storage organizers (I used these).

To store loose craft items I used clear plastic bins and plastic drawers.

Wall Storage Ideas

To utilize our office walls for storage I designed a pegboard and my husband build it and installed it over our daughter’s drafting table.

I ordered some pegboard baskets, hooks, and some buckets.

Thanks for the great tips on home office organization. I haven't been able to figure out what to do with mine, which is the kitchen table when I'm at home working. I think your rolling files might be a good solution. I could roll all my junk off site when we eat. I like the peg board too. Where to start first?
