Christmas Crack is a buttery, sweet, and salty toffee treat. It is a favorite dessert at our house; after you try it, you will be yours too. This wonderful dessert is also called Christmas crack, candy crack, and pine bark, to name a few.
Christmas Crack Recipe
I stumbled upon this beautiful dessert at church. My friend made it, so I had to ask her for the recipe. You will understand why I had her recipe once you try this heavenly saltine toffee bark.

What is Christmas Crack?
What is Christmas crack? It is a saltine cracker covered in a buttery brown sugar sauce, baked, and topped with dark chocolate.
The salty cracker crunch, caramelized butter, brown sugar, and dark chocolate perfectly combine textures and flavors for this unforgettable indulgence. It’s simple, easy, and delicious.

Baking Supplies
- Nine by 13″ pan
- Cooking rack
- Non-stick aluminum foil
- Saucepan
- Spatula
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring cups
- Silicone hot pads
Ingredients
- Chocolate is the perfect topping for this toffee-like treat. You can use semi-sweet, milk, dark or white chocolate chips, or wafers.
- Butter enhances the flavor and texture. It is also one of the ingredients used to create a toffee base to pour over the crackers.
- Saltine Crackers add the crunchy base for the Christmas Crack. Any saltine crackers should work. We use Premium Original Saltine Crackers, but you can also use Ritz crackers.
- Dark Brown Sugar adds sweetness and richness to the recipe. It is the base of the toffee mixture, which soaks into and hardens on the saltine crackers, creating a brittle experience. Note: You can use light or dark brown sugar for this recipe.

How to Make Christmas Crack
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup butter
- 12 oz. chocolate chips
- Saltine Crackers (enough to cover a nine by 13 baking sheet)
First, line the nine by 13″ pan with foil.
Then, add saltine crackers in a single layer.
This recipe uses only four ingredients, thus making this the easiest candy recipe ever. I used a heavy saucepan to boil the butter and brown sugar mixture.
After boiling the mixture for 3 minutes, pour the hot mixture evenly over the crackers.
I used the back of a wooden spoon to spread the hot butter and sugar mixture over the crackers, but a spatula is even better for this job.
Bake for 7 minutes in a 350-degree F oven.
Toppings
Remove the pan from the oven and place it on a wire cooling rack. Then, immediately spread the chocolate chips evenly over the hot saltine toffee. After the chocolate starts melting, spread evenly over the entire surface with a spatula. You can also melt the chocolate in a double boiler or a microwave and pour it over the toffee.
I like to add toppings to the warm chocolate chips, such as a half cup of chopped pecans.

Great treat. Quick and easy to make. Suggest using parchment instead of foil. Slides right off!

Everything went well till I tried to spread the chocolate chips over the toffee. They didn’t melt completely and when I tried to spread them, the crackers would com up with the chocolate. I even tried melting them under the broiler with the same results. Finally resorted to squashing them with a spoon and dousing them with sprinkles. They’re in the fridge now. I’ll see how they taste after they cool. This is why I don’t bake.

Please clarify. On this page it says preheat oven to 400 but in another spot it says preheat to 350. Also it states a 10 minute bake time in one spot and 7 minutes in another
