What is Christmas Crack?

What is Christmas crack? It is a saltine cracker covered in a buttery brown sugar sauce, baked, and topped with dark chocolate.

The salty cracker crunch, caramelized butter, brown sugar, and dark chocolate perfectly combine textures and flavors for this unforgettable indulgence. It’s simple, easy, and delicious.

Baking Supplies

Ingredients

  • Chocolate is the perfect topping for this toffee-like treat. You can use semi-sweet, milk, dark or white chocolate chips, or wafers.
  • Butter enhances the flavor and texture. It is also one of the ingredients used to create a toffee base to pour over the crackers.
  • Saltine Crackers add the crunchy base for the Christmas Crack. Any saltine crackers should work. We use Premium Original Saltine Crackers, but you can also use Ritz crackers.
  • Dark Brown Sugar adds sweetness and richness to the recipe. It is the base of the toffee mixture, which soaks into and hardens on the saltine crackers, creating a brittle experience. Note: You can use light or dark brown sugar for this recipe.

How to Make Christmas Crack

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 12 oz. chocolate chips
  • Saltine Crackers (enough to cover a nine by 13 baking sheet)

First, line the nine by 13″ pan with foil.

Then, add saltine crackers in a single layer.

This recipe uses only four ingredients, thus making this the easiest candy recipe ever. I used a heavy saucepan to boil the butter and brown sugar mixture.

After boiling the mixture for 3 minutes, pour the hot mixture evenly over the crackers.

I used the back of a wooden spoon to spread the hot butter and sugar mixture over the crackers, but a spatula is even better for this job.

Bake for 7 minutes in a 350-degree F oven.

Toppings

Remove the pan from the oven and place it on a wire cooling rack. Then, immediately spread the chocolate chips evenly over the hot saltine toffee.  After the chocolate starts melting, spread evenly over the entire surface with a spatula. You can also melt the chocolate in a double boiler or a microwave and pour it over the toffee.

I like to add toppings to the warm chocolate chips, such as a half cup of chopped pecans.

I have made this recipe for years now with no issues and it's always a huge hit. For some reason the toffee part is coming out thin and watery, not the thick consistency. I truly have no idea what I've done wrong especially since I've made this several times. Any advice would be appreciated!

I wish I had read further down to see you added pecans since it wasn't in the list of ingredients. Dang it! Otherwise, it's good but I'm making a batch without the chocolate and using caramel bits and pecans.

I made this recipe on the weekend, made it with graham crackers instead of saltines. It was excellent!

This one didn't work for me, the caramel didn't settle into the crackers and has an unpleasant gritty texture. I weighed out 12oz of chocolate and it was way too much, the chocolate layer is really thick and unwieldly. Not a win in my opinion. I make toffee and brittle every year for the holidays so I know my way around caramel, this one just didn't work out.
