Halloween is such a fun night in my neighborhood, and I wanted to craft some homemade Halloween lanterns that would bring joy to all who visit. Setting up spooky cute Halloween displays or scenes takes planning, time, and money; hence I try to up-cycle and DIY Halloween decorations the easiest way possible.
Easy Halloween Decorations – Halloween Lanterns
I am obsessed with lanterns and candles; therefore, I decorate for every holiday using them. Lanterns for Halloween remind me of the Headless Horseman since he was holding a lantern while he rode his horse. Real carved pumpkins are the traditional Halloween Jack o’ Lantern luminaries, but they tend to rot so fast here in Florida. Thus the best glowing Halloween decoration is a lantern.
My Halloween lanterns were made as prototypes for a trellis we built this past summer. Read about that below.
While building the trellis, I decided to make some solar lanterns with the leftover wood. Still, first, I created two different prototypes to help me determine what style I wanted to attach to my trellis permanently. After that, I decided to include some solar lights so they would add beauty at night too. See the excellent results in my earlier post about trellis and building an outdoor lantern.

Halloween Lantern Making
While cleaning up the porch of the woodshop, my husband put my prototype lanterns in the trash pile, but I could not throw them away; therefore, I added them to my upcycle easy Halloween decorations for this year. They are not an exact match, but they look great with the Dollar Tree ribbon bow and candle. The knobs on the top were a gift from my friend, Micheal. So far, I have purchased only Dollar Tree ribbon and one floral bush. So on to the Halloween lantern making with paint and Halloween bows.
They needed a spooky look, so I painted them black. Next, I used spray paint to make it easy to get into all the hard-to-reach areas.
You can see in the photo below that my homemade Halloween lanterns are a little different, but they look great. The cute little wood display riser I build with leftover wood too. See how I make it in this earlier post.
I used my DIY frosted mirror as the background sitting on my DIY One-Board-Bench in the vignette below.
How to Make Dollar Tree Halloween Bows
Making gorgeous bows is easy with this step-by-step video, so if you want to learn how to make bows, you will be on your way to showstopping bows in less than 10 minutes.
Bow Making Supplies and Paint
- Ribbon
- Floral pick
- Floral wire
- Wire cutters (my favorite)
- Cordless glue gun (every crafter must have)
- Rust-oleum paint
My favorite battery-operated candles are covered with wax and have a remote control, so I do not need to disturb my display to turn them on and off.
I added some floral, spiders, and spooky branches to my Dollar Tree ribbon bows.

Gosh, you make the best bows, Kippi! Love that you put the prototype lanterns to good use instead of in the trash. They're perfect for Halloween!
