Enjoying a steaming mug of incredibly creamy and rich hot chocolate is one of my favorite easy treats. Making it super easy and convenient to whip up with hot water and a scoop of this homemade mix. In minutes you will be relaxing and unwinding with a mug of steaming chocolate deliciousness. It is the star of our hot chocolate bar (see how I set up one HERE).
Let me start at the beginning of my journey to make an easy, inexpensive, and healthier hot chocolate mix.
It took so much effort and time with the measuring, cooking, and stirring for a simple mug of hot cocoa. Don’t forget I had to wash a pan, measuring cups, and spoons too.
To make this process easier I thought I would look for a ready-made mix.
So I looked for a store-bought premade, but they contained high fructose corn syrup or were expensive. Therefore, I decided to make my own premade mixture.
I experimented with multiple combinations of ingredients to finally find the perfect combination of chocolate, milk, and sweet. This hot chocolate mix is delicious, inexpensive, and easy.

Hot Chocolate Recipe
Simple ingredients are perfectly balanced to make the best hot chocolate mix.
Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix Ingredients
**I have taped the printed recipe to the inside of a cabinet door to make this recipe with ease.
Mix Ingredients
- 3 cups dry milk powder (or nonfat dry milk powder)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2/3 cup cocoa powder (or dutch process cocoa)
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
You can find all these ingredients in most grocery stores.
Supplies
- Food processer (this is the one I used)
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Gooseneck kettle
- Mugs
- Jar
- Scoop (wood) (metal)
Let’s get cooking…
How to Make the Mix
I like using my food processer to ground all the ingredients into a fine powder. The finer the powder the easier it dissolves in the hot water. Unlike the store-bought mixes, this one easily dissolves.
I add the dry milk powder and sugar first then I add the cocoa since I enjoy watching the layers as they are blending together.
I use granulated sugar not powdered sugar since powdered sugar has corn starch added to it.
Just add a pinch of salt.

Serving suggestions
This mix makes a seriously creamy and delicious mug of hot chocolate. For one cup of hot chocolate, I use a heaping 2 tablespoons of the powdered mixture in a large mug and fill it with hot water from my Keurig coffee machine set on a regular-sized mug setting.
It is perfect for a Hot Chocolate bar. I like to add these printable labels to my jars on my bar.
Serve with your favorite toppings; whipped cream, mini marshmallows, crushed candy canes, mini chocolate chips, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce (my homemade recipe is the best), or any flavor you like.
Add a bow to your jar and give it as a gift with a fun mug.

I'm 54 & my mom would always make this when I was quite young. I made this recipe for my son but I added power creamer. Still a favorite of mine.

I must try this. I just need to find dairy free powder because that will hurt our tummies. But I pinned it though!
