Green Bean Casserole Classic Recipe

Green bean casserole is a holiday family favorite. Growing up, my mother made it for the holidays, and I have carried on the tradition. It pairs well with turkey, fresh cranberry sauce, creamy potato salad, corn casserole, and sweet potato casserole.

Ingredients

  • 3 Cups fresh, frozen green beans or two cans of green beans
  • 1 can (10-ounces) Cream of Mushroom soup (we used the healthier choice soup)
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Milk
  • 1 can (3.5 ounces) French-fried onions
  • Pepper to taste

How to Make Green Bean Casserole

Supplies

  • 1.5-quart casserole dish
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Can opener
  • Colander
  • Heavy-bottomed saucepan
  • Measuring cups

Green Bean Casserole Directions

Step 1

Grease a 9×9 casserole dish with butter or oil.

Step 2

Fresh beans option: If you are using fresh green beans, prepare them by trimming the ends and snapping them in half. Place prepared green beans in a colander, then rinse and drain.

Blanch prepared green beans in a pot of boiling water for two minutes. Next, drain the blanched green beans in a colander.

Canned bean option: You can use either drained regular or French-style canned greens instead of fresh beans.

Frozen green bean option: If you plan to use frozen green beans, you will need to thaw them before preparing the casserole.

Step 3

Place the Cream of Mushroom soup in a large mixing bowl.

Then stir in milk with a whisk until blended.

Stir the soy sauce into the soup mixture.

Fold green beans into the soup mixture.

Stir in half of the French-fried onions into the mixture.

Step 4

Transfer the soup mixture to a prepared 1.5-quart casserole dish.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 25 minutes or until hot.

Step 5

Remove from the oven, stir. Then top with the remaining French-fried onions.

Bake for five more minutes or until the onion topping is golden brown.
