Now that the weather is cooling off, it is time to enjoy baked sweet potatoes. I avoid turning on the oven during the hot summer, so when fall rolls around, I am ready for oven-baked meals.

How to Bake Sweet Potatoes

The natural sweetness comes out when sweet potatoes are baked. They are so easy to bake and packed with nutritional punch.

Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F. Size matters on baking times; however, usually, sweet potatoes are finished baking after 40 to 60 minutes. Insert a knife in the center of the thickest part of the sweet potatoes, and if it goes in without resistance, they are done.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes – Look for potatoes about the same size and shape so they bake for around the same time.

Baking Supplies

Prepare the Sweet Potatoes

Use a vegetable brush to scrub the potatoes under cool running water. Then, pat them dry with a towel.

Steam holes

Use a fork to poke holes in the potatoes. The holes allow steam to escape so the potatoes don’t explode in the oven.

The skins are crisp and flavorful baked directly on a baking sheet.

Prep Baking Sheets

Your potatoes will weep through the steam holes you poked therefore you will want to line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easy clean-up.

Foil Wrapped Sweet Potatoes

Wrapping your sweet potato with foil is another way to bake them. Their skins are soft and easily peel off. They steam in the foil therefore their texture is a little heavier, but they are best for recipes such as sweet potato casserole or sweet potato pie.

This dish really reminds me of home. I live in a remote countryside and I haven't been back to visit home for more than 10 years for many special reasons. I miss this taste, remember the times when gathering with my family to challenge snake 3D, remember the lost evenings. The whole family watched the moon together.
