How Long To Boil Eggs?

There is no simple answer for how long to cook hard-boiled eggs since each cooking method has different cooking time requirements.

However, I uncovered the secret to beautifully cooked and easy-peel hard-boiled eggs. Although I tried three different methods, I found the eggs were not easy to peel for the most part.

However, the Instant Pot hard-boiled eggs are the real easy-peel eggs. I found the perfect way to cook easy-peel eggs, and I cannot wait to share it with you. However, I wanted to share the most used methods first.

Start Cooking Eggs in Boiling Water

The first method I tried started with enough boiling water to cover the eggs. Then, using a strainer, I lowered the eggs into the boiling water and allowed them to boil 30 seconds before lowering the temperature to the lowest setting for 13 minutes.

While the eggs were cooking, I prepared a bowl with ice water. Once I cooked the eggs, I scooped them up with a strainer, gently lowered them into the ice bath, and set the timer for 15 minutes.

Then I peeled the eggs. The eggs were a bit messy to peel. If you would like them soft boiled, allow them to cook for 6 minutes. The soft-boiled eggs turned out perfect with firm egg white and creamy yolks. I enjoy serving them in egg cups with toast.

Start Cooking Eggs in Cold Water

The following method I tried is the one I have been using for years. For this method, place the eggs in the pan and add enough cold water to cover the eggs at least two inches. Next, add one tablespoon of salt and place the pan over high heat until it reaches a boil.

Turn off heat, remove the pan from the burner and cover for 13 minutes. After precisely 13 minutes, remove the eggs from the pan and place them in an ice bath for 5 minutes.

Then gently crack the entire egg and start peeling from the large end. Peel the eggs under running water. These still were not easy-peel eggs. See the photo below.

Tip: When using the stovetop cook method, use older eggs to make them easier to peel.

Allow the eggs to cool for 5 minutes before peeling. This step is where I started getting giddy. I peeled the first egg, and the peel came off in one piece, and I was amazed. I knew that had to be a fluke, so I peeled another egg, and again the peel slid off in one piece.

So I cooked another batch, this time using fresh eggs that I just purchased, and again they ALL were easy-peel hard-boiled eggs!  I cannot wait to make a batch of deviled eggs with these Instant Pot hard-boiled eggs and decorate some for Easter eggs.

The Best Way to Cook Easy Peel Eggs

In conclusion, the best hard-boiled eggs are not the ones cooked on a stove, but the ones cooked in an Instant Pot. You will be so surprised and delighted with the results. Thus the trick to peeling hard-boiled eggs is to cook them in an Instant Pot.

I have one question which seems to never be mentioned when talking about steaming or boiling eggs. What temp should the eggs be before cooking them?
