How to Make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

The hardest part of making chocolate chip banana bread is waiting for three bananas to overripe. You can freeze over-ripe bananas, and then when you have three, you are ready to make this recipe.

Special Tools

Ingredients

The ingredients for chocolate chip banana bread are simple. You probably have most of these ingredients on hand, and if you are like me, you have some overripe bananas in the freezer.

  • Eggs – The egg is the binding agent that combines all the bread ingredients, providing a tender texture. Room-temperature eggs are best.
  • Sour milk—Sour milk adds a tangy flavor that balances the sweetness. Add one teaspoon of white vinegar to make sour milk and let it sit for five minutes.
  • Salt – Salt adds flavor and balances the sweetness.
  • Bananas – Over-ripe bananas add flavor and moisture.
  • Baking powder and Baking soda – These leavening agents help the cake rise.
  • Flour (all-purpose) – All-purpose flour is the base for the bread batter. It gives the batter the ideal texture.
  • Granulated sugar – All-purpose flour is the base for the bread batter. It gives the batter the ideal texture.
  • Brown sugar – Combines with the other ingredients, and the molasses in the brown sugar adds depth to the flavor.
  • Vegetable oil – The addition of oil provides a soft texture and moisture.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips – Add a little sweetness and irresistible chocolate flavor.
Recipe ingredients on a countertop

Prepare your bread pan by adding a piece of parchment with an overhang (flaps). I use a few bull clips to hold the flaps in place while pouring the batter into the pan. Then I use baking spray in the corners to ensure the bread does not stick.

Use a fork and plate to mash the bananas.

Stir until blended, but do not overwork the batter.

Pour batter into a prepared pan. Sprinkle 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips over the top of the bread batter.

Transfer bread to a preheated 325-degree F oven and bake for one hour. Test for doneness with a toothpick. Bake until the toothpick comes out clean.

Place the baked bread on a wire cooling rack for 15 minutes until removing it.

Use the parchment paper overhang flaps to remove the bread. Place the bread back on the wire rack to cool completely.
